Buying Coilovers Online: A Transparent Look at How the Industry Works

This article was written by Coilovers.com Owner and Principal, Lou Tortola.

This one is written with a single goal in mind. Transparency. Shopping for a coilover kit here or anywhere else? You deserve to know what happens once you place an order. Not the marketing version. The real one.

I am Lou Tortola, owner of Coilovers.com. We have shipped well over 20,000 coilover kits. Some went out the same day they were ordered. We have also waited weeks on kits built for one customer's chassis and driving style. Here is how buying coilovers online works.

A Quick History of How We Got Here

Coilovers came out of motorsport, where teams needed spring and damper in one tunable unit. That technology reached street cars, and today dozens of brands and thousands of part numbers cover a huge range of platforms. That growth is why buying coilovers online is not as simple as clicking buy. The box is not always on your porch two days later.

Why There Are So Many Coilover Kits

Unlike a set of wheels, coilovers are not universal parts. Every kit is engineered for a specific year, make, model and chassis. Often the same nameplate needs different mounting points and damper lengths from one generation to the next.

Now layer driving intent on top of that. Street comfort, street performance, track days, time attack, autocross or a daily that sees the odd canyon run. Each use comes with its own ride height target, spring rate range and damping preference. Suddenly you are not looking at one kit. You are looking at thousands of valid configurations across hundreds of platforms.

The Honest Industry Reality

No dealer has every coilover kit sitting on a shelf ready to ship tomorrow. The number of platforms and configurations makes that impossible. If a dealer suggests otherwise, ask them to confirm the exact kit by phone.

Why "In Stock" Online Does Not Always Mean Immediate

Most coilover dealers, us included, rely on catalogs and availability feeds from manufacturers and distributors. Those systems change constantly. Inventory can sell out overnight, and a popular application can disappear in a single weekend.

So here is what often happens. A kit shows as available online and an order gets placed. Only then does the dealer confirm real-time availability with the brand. Sometimes it ships right away. Other times the kit joins a production queue.

That is not a bait and switch. It is the reality of a global supply chain of coilover manufacturers serving thousands of car platforms.

The BC Racing Exception and Where It Still Has Limits

Among the most popular kits we sell are BC Racing coilovers, and for good reason. BC Racing North America keeps inventory for many high-demand applications. On many popular platforms, a BR Series kit can often ship quickly from existing stock. The BR Series gives you 30-click simultaneous compression and rebound on a single knob.

Less common applications, other series in the series ladder and custom spring rates are more likely to need a production run. A sudden spike in demand can push any order into the queue. If you want Swift Springs SPEC-R springs, an upgrade option on most BC Racing fitments, ask about timing when you order. Even a well-stocked brand cannot keep everything on a shelf at all times.

Why Many Brands Build to Order

Plenty of brands we carry build in batches or to order rather than holding deep warehouse stock. Fortune Auto builds every kit to order in Virginia, with custom valving for your application. Feal hand-builds in Murrieta, California. KW, Öhlins, TEIN and Ksport each run their own production and distribution. Some kits cross an ocean before they reach us.

When a kit is not prebuilt, it moves through a production queue behind other customer orders. Damper assembly, quality control, freight and customs all add to the delivery window.

The Honest Truth About Lead Times

Waiting is normal in this market, and a realistic delivery window is part of buying in.

For a coilover kit that is not prebuilt and in stock, expect a wait measured in weeks, not days. On our own orders, built-to-order kits typically take 3 to 12 weeks. About 6 weeks is the most common. The exact window depends on the brand, the kit and the time of year.

Brand ETAs are estimates, not guarantees. Most hold. Some slip, usually because a single component is late. A five-week estimate can turn into eight.

What a good dealer does is stay honest about the timeline, watch the order and push the brand on your behalf when delays happen.

The 80/20 Rule, Explained

This is a rule of thumb, not a measured statistic, but it explains most of what you will run into.

Most demand comes from a small set of common platforms and configurations. Those kits are more likely to be in stock and ship quickly.

The rest of demand covers less common cars, specific trims, niche chassis and custom setups. Those are far more likely to be built on demand.

Why "I Will Just Buy It Somewhere Else" Rarely Works

This is one of the hardest lessons for buyers. If one authorized dealer cannot get a specific coilover kit right away, other authorized dealers usually face the same wait. Inventory is controlled by the brand, not the retailer. Buyers who cancel and search often find the same kit is not shipping from anyone.

If one dealer claims a kit is ready to ship that every other authorized seller lists on backorder, ask why. Either the kit is on their shelf, which a phone call will confirm, or the listing is wrong. Verify before you pay.

What Actually Matters When Choosing a Coilover Dealer

The most important factor is not who promises the fastest shipping on a product page. It is who tells you the truth, follows through, answers the phone and stays involved until your kit is delivered and installed.

The Questions a Good Dealer Should Ask You

What is the exact year, make, model and trim? Suspension geometry changes from generation to generation. Skipping this step is how people end up with the wrong kit.

How do you use the car? Daily driver, weekend car, track day, dedicated race car, drift or show. The right kit depends on the answer.

What ride height are you targeting? A mild drop and an aggressive stance call for different kit configurations.

Do you need custom spring rates? Custom rates add lead time. It pays to know up front.

What is the timeline? If you need the car back on the road for a specific event, say so. That changes which brand and kit we suggest.

Unsprung Weight Still Matters

Remember what a coilover kit is for: the right spring rate for your platform plus damping you can tune. Unsprung weight matters too. That is the wheel, tire, hub and brakes, and a coilover alone does not change it much. Lighter wheels do. Shopping on price alone is how people end up disappointed. Shopping on fit, use and support is how they end up happy a year later.

What Happens After You Order at Coilovers.com

1. The order goes to the brand. We send it right away and confirm real-time stock with the brand.

2. In stock, it ships. It comes to our Plymouth, Michigan warehouse first for checks and customs paperwork, then travels to you by UPS or another reliable courier.

3. Built to order, we track it. If the kit is on backorder or needs a production run, we follow up with the brand and keep you posted.

4. Deadline? Tell us. If your project is time-sensitive, we push for you and look at faster options. Sometimes that means a different series within the same brand that can ship in your window.

Every order gets a real person attached to it. The seal and locking collar on your coilover may be identical to the next customer's. The conversation about your build is yours alone.

Buying Coilovers Online With Confidence

Doing the work right matters more than saying it is easy. If you are unsure about availability, ask. If you need a timeline, tell us. If the kit is available, we will ship it. If not, we will get it to you as fast as the brand can build it. Call 1-800-460-9106 and get a real person who knows the platforms and the products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are coilovers in stock when the website says they are?

Usually, but not always. Dealer sites, ours included, pull availability from the brands. That data is right most of the time but can shift within hours. We confirm real-time stock with the brand once an order is placed. If there is a gap, we tell you right away.

What is a realistic lead time for a coilover kit that is not prebuilt?

Plan on weeks, not days. On our own orders, built-to-order kits typically take 3 to 12 weeks, with about 6 weeks the most common. The window depends on the brand, the kit and the season. Most estimates hold, and some slip when a component runs late. How a dealer handles that slip is what separates a good one from the rest.

Does BC Racing always ship fast?

Often, especially BR Series kits for popular platforms. BC Racing North America keeps inventory for many high-demand applications. Less common fitments, other series and custom spring rates are more likely to need a production run. Call us and we will check before you order.

Why does a custom spring rate add lead time?

Because the kit has to be built or rebuilt with different springs, and sometimes revalved to suit them. That is skilled bench time, not a shelf pick. Expect added lead time with any brand.

Can I return a coilover kit built with custom spring rates?

Ask before you order. A kit with custom rates is built for your car, not pulled from a shelf. Confirm fitment and rates with us before the build starts, and ask about the return terms for that brand at the same time. Our guide to spring rates helps you decide whether you need a custom rate at all.

Can I test fit coilovers and still return them?

Call us before you install anything. Check the box against the parts list and the listing first. An installed coilover shows marks from the install, and that can affect a return. If something looks wrong for your car, stop and call us with your order number.

Can I get a lower price or faster shipping from a different dealer?

Pricing on authorized brands is often set by the manufacturer and looks similar across authorized retailers. The brand controls inventory, not the retailer. If another authorized dealer has the kit in hand, great. If not, you face the same wait anywhere else.

Do you carry KW, Fortune Auto, Öhlins, Feal and TEIN?

Yes. We are an authorized dealer for those brands and others. Stock and build times vary by brand and by application. Fortune Auto builds every kit to order. We will tell you where your kit sits in the queue before you commit.

Where should I buy coilovers?

Buy from an authorized dealer for the brand you want. You get a genuine, current kit with the brand's support behind it, and some warranties, like KW's, require an authorized dealer. Online works fine. Every kit comes to our Plymouth, Michigan warehouse first, where we confirm the kit, check the sealed box and prepare the customs paperwork. It then travels to you by UPS or another reliable courier. Your Canadian price includes duties, brokerage and import taxes, with free shipping across Canada on most kits. A local shop works too, if it is authorized.

What should I ask when I call?

Have your year, make, model and trim ready. Tell us how you use the car, your ride height and performance suspension goals, and your timeline. That lets us suggest the right brand, the right kit and an honest lead time instead of a guess.
