Volkswagen Golf, GTI, Golf R and Jetta Coilovers
VW coilovers for the Golf, GTI, Golf R and Jetta come down to three checks. Know the Mk generation, the front strut diameter, and whether the car has DCC adaptive damping. Get those right, plus 4Motion on the Golf R and R32, and you will order the coilover kit that bolts on.
The VW world is full of near-misses. Two Mk7 Golfs from the same year can need different kits because one has the larger front strut. A GTI with DCC needs a kit that deals with the factory electronics. This guide walks through our listings by generation, using the exact wording in each title. Confirm your car on the product page, or call 1-800-460-9106 with your VIN.
VW Coilovers Start With Three Checks
Mk generation. Each Mk generation has its own listings, though some brands list the Mk5 and Mk6 together. Match the generation in the title. The Jetta uses its own generation names in some titles, such as A5, A6 and A7.
Front strut diameter. Many VW listings split by the size of the factory front strut. Brands write it differently. BC Racing titles say 49.5 mm or 54.5 mm. Bilstein, Ksport and Solo-Werks titles say 50 mm or 55 mm. Match your car to the wording in the listing you are ordering, and ask us if you are unsure which strut your car has.
DCC. DCC is VW's adaptive damping system, and KW's Mk8 titles call it Dynamic Damper Control. KW lists separate kits with and without it. Some other listings say "Without DCC" or "Without Electronic Suspension."
Two more details matter on some cars. The rear suspension type splits several Mk7 and Jetta listings into torsion beam and multi-link (independent rear). And drivetrain matters: the Golf R and R32 are 4Motion all-wheel drive, and many listings name it.
Mk7 Golf, GTI and Golf R
The Mk7 has the widest choice in our catalogue. Here is how the main listings read.
BC Racing. The 2015 to 2021 Golf FWD/AWD, GTI FWD and Golf R AWD kit (MK7/A7) is one listing. Its title says all models must have the 54.5 mm front strut. A separate BC Racing listing covers the 2015 to 2021 Golf VII FWD with the 49.5 mm strut. Swift Springs SPEC-R springs are an upgrade option on most BC Racing fitments.
KW. KW lists the 2015 to 2021 Golf VII GTI with DCC and without DCC as two kits. The 2015 to 2019 Golf VII R with DCC listing includes a cancellation kit, and there is a matching Golf VII R without DCC.
Öhlins. Öhlins lists Road & Track kits for the 2015 to 2020 Golf GTI (MK7) and the 2015 to 2020 Golf R (MK7). Road & Track kits use Öhlins's DFV (Dual Flow Valve).
Fortune Auto. Fortune Auto lists the 2015 to 2021 VW Golf GTI, Separate Style Rear (MK7). Fortune Auto hand-builds its kits in Virginia and valves each one for its application.
Solo-Werks and Bilstein. Solo-Werks lists the 2015 to 2021 Golf 2.0T/GTI with the 55 mm front strut tube and multi-link rear (MK7). Bilstein lists a B14 PSS kit for the 2015 to 2021 GTI without electronic suspension, with the 55 mm front strut and independent rear suspension.
Mk8 GTI and Golf R
The Mk8 list is shorter and newer, so read the years closely.
BC Racing: the 2022 to 2023 GTI FWD with 54.5 mm front strut (MK8). BC Racing also lists the 2022 to 2025 Golf R with 54.5 mm front strut (MK8).
KW: the 2022 to 2023 Golf GTI (MKVIII) and Golf R (MKVIII), each with Dynamic Damper Control (includes cancellation kit) or without it.
Öhlins: Road & Track kits for the 2021 to 2025 Golf GTI (MK8) and the 2021 to 2025 Golf R (MK8).
If your car has DCC and you choose a kit that does not include a cancellation kit, plan for one. Öhlins lists a Cancellation Kit for DCC for the 2015 to 2023 Golf (MK7/MK8) as a separate part.
Mk5 and Mk6 Golf, GTI and Golf R
Older cars have plenty of options, but the titles carry more caveats.
Mk5: BC Racing lists the 2006 to 2010 Golf V FWD (GTI, DTI) + Rabbit + MKV R32 (2008 only). Öhlins lists a Road & Track kit for the 2006 to 2014 Golf GTI (MK5 and MK6). KW lists the 2006 to 2009 Golf V GTI + Rabbit, 2WD, and a separate 2008 Golf V R32 4motion.
Mk6 GTI: KW lists the 2010 to 2014 Golf VI, all gas engines including GTI, with DCC (includes cancellation kit) or without DCC.
Mk6 Golf R: BC Racing lists the 2012 to 2013 Golf R AWD (Without DCC) + GTI (MK6). KW lists the 2012 to 2013 Golf VI R with DCC (Incl. ESC Module) or without DCC. Öhlins lists a Road & Track kit for the 2012 to 2013 Golf R (MK6). Bilstein lists a B14 PSS kit for the 2012 to 2013 Golf R with 55 mm front strut and IRS, without electronic suspension.
Jetta and Jetta GLI
The Jetta splits by strut size and rear suspension more than any other VW here.
Jetta VII and GLI (2019 to 2021): BC Racing lists a Jetta VII/Jetta GLI FWD kit with 54.5 mm front strut. It also lists a Jetta VII FWD kit with 49.5 mm strut. Solo-Werks lists the Jetta GLI with 55 mm front strut tube and multi-link rear. It also lists Jetta kits for 50 mm and 55 mm struts with torsion beam rear.
Jetta VI and GLI: KW lists the 2012 to 2018 Jetta VI GLI 2.0T. BC Racing lists the 2011 to 2018 Jetta FWD (MK6/V6) in 49.5 mm and 54.5 mm strut versions.
Solo-Werks S1 coilovers have adjustable ride height and factory-calibrated fixed damping. Solo-Werks brings tight VW, Audi and European-platform focus, which shows in how finely its titles split the Jetta.
4Motion, the R32 and All-Wheel-Drive Splits
The Golf R and the older R32 are all-wheel drive, and the titles treat them as separate cars. KW's 1999 to 2005 Golf IV listing reads "all models excl. 4motion; all engines excl. R32." KW lists the 2004 Golf IV R32 4motion as its own kit. BC Racing lists the 1999 to 2005 Golf R32 AWD (MK4) with a Swift Front Only note.
That is why a Golf and a Golf R from the same generation often need a different coilover kit. Shopping VW coilovers by chassis code alone is the classic mistake. Read the drivetrain words in the title before you order. Our guide to Audi coilover conversion covers the same issues on VW's sister platforms.
DCC: Keep It, Cancel It or Skip It
If your car has DCC, the factory dampers are electronically controlled. Remove them and the car's computer notices. A cancellation kit stops the warning. KW's DCC listings name what comes with them, such as a cancellation kit or, on the Mk6 Golf R, an ESC module.
A passive coilover has no wiring, so you lose the drive-mode damping changes. You gain manual adjustment. KW V3 adjusts compression and rebound independently. The BC Racing BR Series has 30-click simultaneous compression and rebound on one knob. Our guide to coilovers and electronics explains how performance suspension and factory systems interact.
A few practical notes for every Golf and Jetta build. If the parts themselves are new to you, start with what are coilovers. Set ride height at the lower mount on full-length kits, and use the spring perch for preload. Lock each locking collar, then align the car, because any height change moves camber and toe. Unsprung weight will not change much with any kit; it is mostly wheels, tires, hubs and brakes. For ride comfort, read our guide on how coilovers affect ride quality before you choose a spring rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Many VW listings split by front strut diameter, written as 49.5 or 54.5 mm by BC Racing and 50 or 55 mm by other brands. The size is not on the badge. Call us with your VIN, or have a shop measure the strut body.
Sometimes. One BC Racing Mk7 listing covers the Golf FWD/AWD, GTI FWD and Golf R AWD. The car must have the 54.5 mm front strut. KW and Öhlins list the GTI and Golf R separately. Follow the listing for your exact car.
Yes. KW lists Mk6, Mk7 and Mk8 kits for cars with DCC, and each title names the electronics part it includes. Öhlins lists a Cancellation Kit for DCC for the 2015 to 2023 Golf (MK7/MK8) as a separate part. You lose the drive-mode damping and gain manual adjustment.
For a daily GTI, choose a sensible spring rate and a modest drop. Solo-Werks S1 has fixed damping and adjustable height. KW V2 and KW V3, Öhlins, BC Racing and Fortune Auto add damping adjustment. Tell us your roads and we will help you pick.
Often, yes. The Golf R is 4Motion all-wheel drive, and many brands list it separately. Check the drivetrain words in the title, such as AWD, 4motion or "excl. 4motion."
Yes. Any ride height change moves camber and toe. Let the springs settle, then have the car aligned. If the shop runs out of camber adjustment on a big drop, ask us about camber parts for your car.
