Mazda Miata Coilovers: NA, NB, NC and ND
We list Miata coilovers for all four generations, NA, NB, NC and ND, from BC Racing, KW, Fortune Auto, TEIN, Öhlins, Bilstein, Feal and Ksport. The right kit depends on which generation you own and whether the car lives on the street, at autocross or on track.
Few cars get modified as often or as thoughtfully as the Miata. It is light, balanced and honest, so a suspension change shows up in the first corner. That cuts both ways. A good setup makes the car sing. A bad one makes it skate, bounce or scrape. Below is what we list for each generation, then the setup notes we give street, autocross and track owners.
Every fitment here comes from the title of our own product listing. Confirm your car on the product page, or call 1-800-460-9106 with your VIN before you order.
NA and NB Miata Coilovers: 1989 to 2005
Most NA and NB kits share one listing, because most brands list the two generations together. Here is what we list.
BC Racing. The BC Racing 1990 to 2005 Miata kit covers the NA and NB. Its title says Extreme by Default. Ask us what that means for your target height before you order.
Fortune Auto. Lists the NA and NB from 1989 to 2005.
KW. Lists the NA for 1990 to 1997 and the NB for 1999 to 2005 as separate kits.
TEIN. Lists Street Basis Z, Street Advance Z, Flex Z and Mono Sport for 1990 to 2005, naming chassis NA6C, NA8C and NB8C.
Öhlins, Feal and Ksport. Öhlins lists Road & Track for 1990 to 2005 NA and NB. Feal lists 1990 to 2004. Ksport splits 1990 to 1998 and 1999 to 2005.
Two notes for older cars. First, a car this old may have rust or worn bushings where the new parts bolt in. Check the mounts before you blame the coilovers. Second, plan your wheel and tire size along with your ride height. They decide your clearance together.
NC Miata Coilovers: 2006 to 2015
The NC often gets overlooked, but it has a deep coilover list.
BC Racing. The BC Racing 2006 to 2015 Miata kit is RWD. BC Racing also lists a separate Extreme Low kit for the NC.
Bilstein. The Bilstein B14 PSS kit for the NC has fixed damping and adjustable height. Bilstein also lists a B12 Pro-Kit, which pairs dampers with lowering springs rather than a coilover setup.
KW, TEIN and Fortune Auto. KW's 2006 to 2015 listing names the NC1. TEIN lists four kits for the NCEC. Fortune Auto lists the NC for 2006 to 2015.
Öhlins, Feal and Ksport. Öhlins lists Road & Track for the NC. Feal's NC listing reads 2005 to 2015, and its NA/NB listing stops at 2004. If you own a 2005 car, call us with your VIN before you order a Feal kit. Ksport lists 2006 to 2015.
If you own a late NC, give us the VIN. KW's NC1 wording is worth confirming against your exact car.
ND Miata Coilovers: 2016 and Up
The ND has a long list too. The RF matters here, so read each title.
Names the RF. KW's 2016 to 2021 ND listing includes the RF. TEIN's 2016 to 2019 listings include the RF too.
BC Racing. Lists the 2016 to 2023 MX-5 Roadster RWD. If you own an RF, call us before you order.
Fortune Auto and Öhlins. Fortune Auto lists the ND for 2016 to 2024. The Öhlins Road & Track ND listing covers 2016 to 2025.
Bilstein, Feal and Ksport. Bilstein lists the B14 PSS, B12 Pro-Kit and B12 Sportline for 2016 to 2025. Feal and Ksport list 2016 to 2020.
Newer model years thin out on some brands. If your year is not in a title, call us. We will not guess.
Before You Order: Springs, Rates and Upkeep
A few details spare you time once the box arrives.
Read the spring rates. Many kits list spring rates in kgf/mm. To convert, 1 kgf/mm equals about 56 lb/in as a rule of thumb (55.9974 to four decimal places). A rate that looks soft in one unit may not be soft in the other.
Custom rates and Swift. On BC Racing, you can order custom spring rates or Swift Springs SPEC-R springs. A custom build fee applies, and we pass it on without markup. Fortune Auto builds every kit to order and can tune valving to your use.
Check what is in the box. Top mounts, camber adjustment and hardware vary by brand and listing. Read the product page for your coilover kit so nothing surprises you on install day.
Plan for upkeep. Seals and oil are wear items on any damper. Fortune Auto publishes its own rebuild schedule. It calls for a rebuild every 60,000 miles for street-only use, and every 15,000 to 30,000 miles for mixed use. Check other brands' service advice in their manuals.
Many Miatas are summer cars that sit through winter. Before storage, clean the threads, check every locking collar and look for any oil on the damper bodies. Small problems are easier to fix in the off season than the week before your first event.
Street, Autocross and Track Setups
The Miata does all three, often in the same week. Set it up for the one you do most.
Street
Keep the drop modest. There is no single safe drop for every car. It depends on wheels, tires and the bump travel you have left. Go too low and the car rides on its bump stops, which feels harsh and unpredictable. Spring rate and damping both shape comfort, so start from the kit's default spring rate and the manual's damping setting. Our guide on how coilovers affect ride quality explains why.
Autocross
Autocross rewards quick transitions and a car that puts power down out of tight corners. Adjustable damping helps you tune between runs. Change one thing at a time and write it down. Check your class rules before you buy, because they can limit what you change.
Track
Long sessions bring heat, so damper consistency matters. Set ride height, then corner weights, then alignment. Corner balancing aims for about 50 percent cross weight. Our coilover setup guide covers each discipline in more depth.
For all three
On full-length kits like BC Racing and Fortune Auto, height is set at the lower mount. The spring perch sets preload. Our guide on how to set ride height on coilovers walks through it. Tighten each locking collar, then recheck after a few hundred miles. Align after every height change, because camber and toe move with ride height. Start damping from the kit's manual setting, since click counting differs by brand.
On a car this light, unsprung weight is worth thinking about. A coilover kit does not automatically cut it. The wheel, tire, brakes and hub make up most of the unsprung weight, so lighter wheels do more than any damper swap.
Matching a Brand to Your Miata
We are an authorized dealer for every brand here. Each serves a different Miata owner.
BC Racing covers all four generations with nitrogen-charged monotube dampers. The BR Series is the volume kit, with 30-click simultaneous compression and rebound. Swift Springs SPEC-R springs are an upgrade option on most BC Racing fitments.
Fortune Auto hand-builds in Virginia. The 500 Series is a single-adjustable monotube, custom valved for your car and how you use it.
KW brings German engineering and TÜV certification on most kits. KW V3 has independently adjustable compression and rebound.
Öhlins lists Road & Track kits for every Miata generation, and Road & Track kits use DFV (Dual Flow Valve). TEIN gives you 16-click damping on Street Advance Z and Flex Z. Bilstein invented the monotube damper. Feal hand-builds in Murrieta, California.
Pick a coilover kit for how you drive, not for the label on the box. That is how performance suspension on a Miata stays fun for years.
Frequently Asked Questions
On many brands, yes, because they list the NA and NB together. BC Racing, Fortune Auto, TEIN, Öhlins and Feal list them in one kit. KW and Ksport list them as separate kits. Check the title for your year.
KW's 2016 to 2021 ND listing and TEIN's 2016 to 2019 listings name the RF. For other brands, call us with your VIN before you order.
There is no single answer. Autocross rewards adjustable damping you can change between runs and a spring rate that suits your tires. Check your class rules first, then tell us your class and we will narrow it down.
There is no single safe number. On perch-only kits, lowering eats into bump travel, so a big drop can leave the car on its bump stops. Start modest, check clearance and adjust from there.
The B12 Pro-Kit pairs Bilstein dampers with lowering springs. It is a shock and spring package without coilover height adjustment. The Bilstein B14 PSS is the coilover, with fixed damping and adjustable height.
Yes. Any ride height change alters camber and toe. Set your height, let the car settle, then align it. On a Miata, small alignment changes are easy to feel.
It is wording from the BC Racing listing title. Call us before you order and we will explain what it means for the ride height you are after.
